The number of electrical outlets that can be installed on a circuit depends on the amperage rating of the circuit breaker and the wattage of the devices connected to the outlets. By Ontario Electrical Code if the load of the outlets cannot be determined we cannot exceed 80% of the breaker’s amperage rating or no more than 12 devices per circuit.
A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet is designed to protect people from electrical shock in wet or damp locations by detecting imbalances in the electrical current and quickly shutting off the power to the outlet. GFCI outlets should be installed in any area where water is present, such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and outdoor outlets.
A circuit breaker is an electrical safety device that is designed to protect electrical circuits and devices from overloading or short circuits. It works by interrupting the electrical current flow in a circuit when the current exceeds a safe level, thereby preventing damage or fire. When a circuit breaker trips, it must be reset by switching it back to the “on” position.
If your electrical panel is old, damaged, or outdated, it may need to be replaced to ensure safety and reliability. Signs that your electrical panel may need to be replaced include frequent tripping of circuit breakers, rust or corrosion on the panel, overheating or burning smells near the panel, and the use of outdated fuses instead of circuit breakers. An electrician can help you determine if your electrical panel needs to be replaced.
Before replacing a light switch or electrical outlet, always turn off the power to the circuit at the breaker box. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the power is off. Remove the cover plate and unscrew the device from the electrical box. Carefully disconnect the wires from the old device and connect them to the corresponding terminals on the new device. Make sure all connections are tight and secure, and then carefully push the device back into the electrical box and attach it with screws. Finally, replace the cover plate and turn the power back on at the breaker box.
